Why does "Customer/Bank" appear instead of the customer's name when swiping a credit card?

Why does a customer's name appear as something generic like "CUSTOMER/BANK" when I swipe their card?

If your card swiper reads a generic name from a card, such as the one pictured above, it typically indicates that the card is either:

    • a temporary card from the customer's bank, for use until a permanent card can be issued.
    • a pre-paid card, as seen in major retailers and grocery stores.
