Surcharge Fees
Description
In June 2023, we updated Paya Connect for our Surcharge Handling Features. These enhancements enable our merchants in utilizing surcharging correctly by preventing the addition of surcharge use to debit cards.
Consumer Fees are compatible on Paya Connect with the following products:
- PayForm
- Direct API
- Quick Invoice
- Virtual Terminal
- Hosted Payment Pages (HPP)

FAQs
Q: How does this feature work?
A: This feature examines the BIN data of both new and tokenized payment cards to determine whether they are categorized as debit or credit. If the BIN indicates a debit card, the transaction model will automatically eliminate the surcharge from the transaction request and adjust the transaction amount field to display the accurate subtotal (including any other eligible amounts).
Q: Can I opt out of this feature?
A: Yes, currently, merchants can opt out of this feature by reaching out to your support rep (please see the Paya Contact Information article: https://support.paya.com/contact-paya) to update the Consumer Fee settings. However, we strongly advise all merchants to opt into this feature to ensure compliance with card brand regulations.
Please note that currently, this field is optional, but we strongly recommend that all new services utilizing surcharging employ the ‘Surcharge’ Consumer Fee type to maintain compliance. We do not have a specific timeline for when this will become a ‘required’ field.
